Dovetail — Long-Sleeve Tee

The chair has moved with me three times, which is more commitment than it was promised when I first carried it home. At the time I needed somewhere to sit. The chair was available, the color was good, and the person helping me carry it believed we would fit through the door if I would stop offering advice from the easy end.

Now people ask whether I am going to replace it. They have usually just sat down in it, which makes the question rather difficult to take as a disinterested recommendation. I know there are better chairs in several measurable respects. This one has heard the first version of nearly every important story I have told in this room. It has held a book open with its arm, received a coat while I answered the door, and provided a very useful place to think of something I should have said yesterday.

The clay long sleeve is waiting beside it today. I put it on, move the book to the table and sit for a minute before leaving. From here I can see the part of the window I like and very little of the washing-up. This is an arrangement I have spent years appreciating without writing down the measurements. When a friend arrives, they go straight to the chair. I let them have it while I make the drinks. From the kitchen they call out that I really should keep this one. I ask what gave them that idea.
