You were going back after dinner. A simple plan, clear enough to survive being repeated to another adult. Then a bookshop window on Corrientes in Buenos Aires catches your attention, and apparently going back now includes going inside. Just for a minute. You have said this in bookshops before. Nobody involved should be allowed to testify under oath.

The shops here can keep their doors open well after dark, a generous arrangement for anyone whose curiosity has failed to notice the time. You pick up one book to judge its first page. This requires the second page, because a fair person considers context. Your companion finds you some time later with the concentrated expression you had promised to bring to choosing tomorrow's plans. You are currently choosing between two entirely different lives and a very large book about neither.

Outside again, you each have something to carry and competing explanations for why it was necessary. There is no sensible reason to read the opening aloud on the walk back, so you do. Your companion interrupts at exactly the wrong moment. You start again. The street gets another few minutes of your evening, and tomorrow's plans remain beautifully untouched. You have, however, become extremely well informed about a fictional person's unfortunate marriage.
