They introduce you as the quiet one. You have been quiet for nearly twenty minutes, so you understand how the evidence has accumulated. There were drinks to carry, somebody was telling a complicated story, and you were enjoying the opportunity to hear the end of a sentence. None of this felt like a lifetime appointment.

Then the conversation reaches something you know about. You put your glass down.

An hour later the person who introduced you looks pleasantly exhausted. You have explained why the film they love is nearly good, admitted that you cry at an extremely ordinary advert, and performed an impression you generally keep for people who have earned it. Someone asks how long the two of you have known each other. Your friend gives an answer that seems to surprise them more than anyone else.

You are fond of being recognized. You are also fond of having a little room left over. A good evening can introduce you to somebody who was not expecting you, even when that somebody has had your number for years.

When you go out to get some air, you pull on the hoodie and let the night cool the back of your neck. Your friend comes with you. They say they had forgotten you could do that impression. You tell them there are several others. They look through the window at the people still inside, then ask whether you might be persuaded to come back.
