"Before you say anything, I know."

Your friend has barely sat down. You are wearing the periwinkle top, the one you tried with three different pairs of trousers before returning to the first pair and deciding the whole thing had taken no time at all. The broad neckline leaves a lovely amount of room for the earrings. You had expected your friend to notice. You had not expected to be so immediately pleased about it.

"I was going to say you look nice."

"Yes. I thought you might."

Now you can get on with the important part, which is a story they have been saving because it is too long to type and requires at least one impression. They begin with somebody you have met twice. By the time the coffee arrives, that person's brother has entered the story, the brother's car has become relevant, and you have been asked to remember the name of a dog. You move your cup to make room for the gestures.

The next table turns slightly toward you. This is understandable; the impression is good. You lean in and ask the question your friend has clearly been waiting for someone to ask. They lean in too. The earrings move. Their face does something promising.

You stay for another coffee. At some point, they say the color really does suit you. You tell them they have already said that. They say no, they haven't. You consider the beginning of the conversation and discover, with some inconvenience, that they are right.
