Another Thing — Heavyweight Tee

You remembered the important part while putting your shoes on. Everyone had moved on. There had been another subject, an offer of tea, and a fairly detailed discussion about whose umbrella this was. None of that changes the fact that your earlier story was missing the only detail that makes it worth telling.

“One other thing.”

Your friend closes their eyes. This is affectionate. You know because they sit down.

The story concerned a neighbor, a fence, and a remarkably confident estimate of how long a small repair would take. You had already described the repair. You had neglected to mention that the neighbor began it from the wrong side. Your friend opens their eyes. Now the fence is worth their attention again.

You like someone who lets a conversation grow a longer tail. Someone who can enjoy the unnecessary part, ask about the neighbor’s ladder, and remember that you were wearing the green tee when the whole afternoon wandered off. There are efficient ways to exchange information. You have apparently dressed for a different occasion.

Twenty minutes later the shoes are still on, the umbrella remains unidentified, and your friend has remembered something about a gate. You take yours off.
