The first kiss is excellent. The difficulty begins afterwards, when both of you attempt to recover the thread of an entirely ordinary conversation. There was something about which way they were walking. At present, neither of you is providing much evidence of having a way.

You had a very good evening. You liked hearing them talk about the friend who keeps lending them enormous books, and the frank admission that one of those books is currently helping a table stand up. You liked being asked what you wanted to do next week. You also liked the narrow neckline with your trousers, the color near your face, and the moment they admitted they had noticed your outfit before you reached the table. You had hoped they would.

'Were you going to say something?' they ask.

You were. You would like to do that again. Slowly, this time, so that neither of you has to follow it immediately with a detailed account of the nearest bus stop. They smile, move a little closer and ask whether this is near enough. You tell them it is an encouraging beginning.

Afterwards, they are looking very pleased with themselves. You point this out. The answer is very direct: they have had rather a good time, and you appear to have something to do with it. You enjoy the answer enough to ask for a little more detail.

Eventually you establish that Thursday is possible. They ask what you would like to do. You say you have enjoyed this part of the evening considerably. They say they will bear that in mind when choosing somewhere for dinner.
